GATE

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is anAll-India examination administered and conducted in eight zones across thecountry by the GATE Committee comprising of Faculty members from IISc,Bangalore and other seven IIT’s on behalf of the National Coordinating Board,Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development. The GATEscore/rank is used for admissions to Post Graduate Programs (ME, M. Tech, MS,Direct Ph.D.) in institutes like IITs and IISc etc with financial assistance offeredby MHRD. PSUs too use the GATE scores for recruiting candidates for variousprestigious jobs with attractive remuneration.

In GATE examination, candidates can apply for only one ofthe 23 papers listed in the table given below. Candidates are expected toappear in a paper appropriate to the discipline of their qualifying degree. However, candidates are free to choose any paper according to their admissionplan, keeping in mind the eligibility criteria of the institutions in whichthey wish to seek admission. For more details regarding the admission criteriain any particular institute, candidates are advised to refer to thewebsites  that particular institute.

The Public Sector Undertakings of Indian Government, number more than 200 commercially functioning companies. The Public Sector Undertaking companies are better known by their shorter initial form of PSU. These undertakings are divided into two parts – state and central.

Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) are government undertaking companies. These provide secure future and good money as these are less affected by the current recession. This sector provides a career for both technical and non-technical personnel.

The students from technical background can apply in technical service providing companies, i.e. BSNL, MTNL, SAIL, NHAI, NTPC, BHEL, ONGC, HPCL, IOCL, BPCL and many more. There are 252 PSUs in India. These PSUs recruit thousands of diploma and degree holding personnel in technical field. All these companies have their own recruiting procedures.

Some of these companies have competitive type examinations and others have technical written and interview rounds. The intimation for the examination is generally notified beforehand repeatedly in their websites and in all the leading daily newspapers.

Pay Structure of PSUs:

Varies according to the status of PSU (Maharatna, Navratna and Miniratna)

S.NO. Type of Companies Salary Structure
1 Maharatna 24900 - 50500
2 Navratna 20600 - 46500
3 Mini-Ratna 16400 - 40500

List of companies in the above three categories are given as

Major PSUs:

State-owned enterprises are called Public Sector Undertakings (PSU) or Public Sector Enterprises. These companies are owned by the union government of India, or one of the many state or territorial governments, or both. The company stock needs to be majority-owned by the government to be a Public Sector Undertaking. PSUs may be classified as Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs), public sector banks (PSBs) or State Level Public Enterprises (SLPEs).

These Enterprises are further divided into-

1. MAHARATNA (Central Public Sector Enterprises)

2. NAVRATNA (Central Public Sector Enterprises)

3. MINIRATNA (Central Public Sector Enterprises)

Indian Engineering Services abbreviated as IES are the civil services that meet the technical and managerial functions of the Government of India. Like most countries, the Government of India recruits its civil servants and officials on the basis of merit, the middle management positions in the bureaucracy are filled through competitive exams. Large number of candidates takes these exams, competing for limited posts. IES officers are selected by the union government on the recommendations made by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). A combined three-stage competitive examination (comprising five tests), called the Engineering Services Examination (ESE) is conducted by the UPSC for recruitment to the Indian Engineering Services.

IES officers carry high respect and status in society and are able to manage activities in diverse areas. Government spending comprises more than 15 percent of India's GDP and given the extent of tasks and functions managed by the public sector, this extends to a fairly broad segment of the economy covering the railways, roads, defense, manufacturing, inspection, supply, construction, public works, power, telecommunications, etc. All appointments to the Group A services are made by the President of India
